Managing a job can often take up a lot of time and effort, leaving little room for the actual work needed. Tasks such as requesting time off, submitting tech support requests, and checking company policies can be a hassle for both HR and IT departments, especially for companies with remote or hybrid work models. A solution to this problem is being offered by Atomicwork, which has launched an AI assistant that automates many of these workflows. Based in San Francisco and Singapore, the company has just come out of stealth mode, having secured $11 million in seed funding from investors such as Blume Ventures, Matrix Partners, Storm Ventures, Neon Fund, and angel investors.

Atomicwork raised $11 million by connecting workers and their companies

In September 2022, Vijay Rayapati, Kiran Darisi, and Parsuram Vijayasankar established Atomicwork. The trio, who have been acquainted for a decade, are all SaaS experts. Rayapati, who previously founded Minjar, a cloud computing company, sold it to Nutanix in 2018, where he worked as GM before embarking on Atomicwork. On the other hand, Darisi and Parsuram were both members of Freshwork’s founding team.

According to Rayapati, the team behind Atomicwork realized that their employees, who played a crucial role in their success, needed access to the same level of software as the rest of the company. To better understand this issue, the team spoke with over one hundred companies and discovered that many needed help with complex internal software and processes that created much unnecessary work. As a result, Atomicwork was born to simplify and streamline these systems for businesses.

According to Rayapati, even the simplest tasks, like acquiring a payslip from finance, requesting hardware, or finding leave or reimbursement documents, can consume a significant amount of time. These tasks waste not only employees’ time but also that of the IT and finance teams, all of which could be easily automated. Additionally, attempting to navigate complicated internal systems, especially without knowing the appropriate software for each department, further hampers employee productivity.

Employees often need to seek assistance from service desks, IT, and HR teams in many companies. This process can be time-consuming, primarily if the organization operates in different time zones. Alternatively, they may have to go through the FAQ section on their employee portal to find answers to questions such as “how to add my email to a new device.” Although it can be a frustrating experience, it’s crucial to receive the support necessary to perform their job effectively.

Rayapati says Atomicwork can speed up answering employee questions by 50% through Atom’s ability to learn from company wikis, policy documents, FAQs, and historical tickets. Atom, an AI assistant, is integrated with collaboration tools such as Slack and Microsoft Teams to provide employees with answers and assistance regarding various departments, including IT, HR, finance, and legal.

Employees can inquire about their day off by typing “Is tomorrow a day off?” and receive a helpful response such as “Yes, tomorrow is Labor Day, so you have the day off.” Alternatively, they can ask for assistance setting up email on their new phone, and Atom will provide them with the necessary link.

Atomicwork provides a variety of workflows that can assist with company operations. These workflows range from fully automated processes, which can handle tasks without requiring manual intervention, to semi-automated workflows that combine automation and human oversight as needed. Examples of these workflows include generative responses to common employee queries, reimbursement procedures that expedite expense settlements, streamlining vendor payments and request approvals, and employee onboarding or offboarding.

Atomicwork primarily targets mid-sized companies with employee numbers ranging from 500 to 2,000, most of which have dedicated budgets for employee support functions. According to Rayapati, the startup views ServiceNow as a rival, but Atomicwork’s distinguishing factor is its incorporation of conversational AI technology right from the beginning. Additionally, Atomicwork aims to provide mid-market businesses with a user-friendly internal delivery system for employees.

The organization has plans to grow its support teams for employees, including legal, facilities, business operations, and general administrative functions. Additionally, it aims to expand into other internal teams, such as sales operations, partner operations, and vendor operations. According to CEO Rayapati, the ultimate goal is for Atomicwork to become a comprehensive business service management suite for internal teams and external partners.

In response to the recent investment, Storm Ventures Partner Arun Penmetsa emphasized the need for a self-service platform to streamline employee interactions with various HR and IT solutions. Atomicwork will significantly improve the hybrid workforce’s employee experience, boosting productivity and reducing delays.
